About Using Heating Oil For A Furnace

by Dora Lowe

Although it is typical for many homes to obtain heat via a gas or electric furnace, sometimes oil is used for its production instead. If your house doesn't have a furnace yet because you are undecided on which type to get installed, one that uses oil might be worth it. The reason why is because using oil is one of the most efficient ways to heat a home, as the flames are hotter than some of the other heating method types. You will basically have the ability to heat your cold home in a short period of time and then turn the heating system off to avoid using too much oil and electricity. Below, you are going to learn more about furnaces that use heating oil.

How a Furnace Uses Heating Oil

In order for a furnace to produce heat via oil, it must have a way to access it on your property. Basically, the oil must be stored inside a tank, which is commonly placed on the outside of a house. There is a pipe that will be attached to the tank that is able to route the oil into your house and to the furnace. The furnace is then able to use the oil to produce a flame that warms your house up, such as by vaporizing and igniting it. There is a blower assembly that the furnace uses to circulate the warm air throughout the ventilation system.

Keeping a Supply of Heating Oil

If you are worried about not being able to use your heating system if the oil runs out, the resolution is to keep the tank filled with a sufficient amount of oil. You should get into the habit of checking the level of oil that is left in the tank and never allowing it to get too low. The best way to keep the tank filled with oil is to get it delivered to your home and placed in the tank on your behalf. You might also have the option of setting a schedule for the oil to automatically be delivered based on how often the heating system is used. For example, you might need to have oil delivered more often during the winter than in summer.

Maintenance Needs for Heating Oil Use

If you get a furnace that used heating oil, maintenance will be necessary, but it isn't any more complicated than with other furnace types. For example, you should get the tank, oil line, and furnace inspected every now and then. It is also important to ensure that the oil isn't leaking, as it can make a big mess. However, keep in mind that leaking heating oil will not cause an explosion, as it will not ignite unless it is in a vaporized form.
