We eat rice, get straight A’s, and are hard to tell apart! I’ve heard of it all, and I’m sure you have too. Stereotypes, while very harmful in many situations, can be great to poke fun at.
Being adopted and raised by white people, I’m what Awkwafina might call a ‘banana’ (yellow on the outside, white on the inside). To celebrate the recent releases of Crazy Rich Asians and To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (both of which feature Asian protagonists!) I’m releasing a special blog post about Asian stereotypes and whether or not they apply to me.
Before we begin, I want to clarify that this post will focus mainly on East Asians stereotypes. I do not claim to represent all Asians, because everyone has different opinions and experiences.
Let’s get debunking!
ASIANS ARE GOOD AT MATH
Do I like math? No. The radian circle gave me actual nightmares. Am I good at it? In all honesty, I would say yes. I’ve always been ahead in my class, and I’ve never once dropped below an A minus!
ASIANS EAT DOGS
ASIANS CAN’T DRIVE
Okay to be fair, I’ve only had my license for under a month, and I think I drive just about as awful as any other teenage girl. So far, so good!
ASIANS PLAY PIANO
I played for seven years and I still wasn’t any good!
ASIAN WOMEN ARE FLAT
Yeah, there’s no lie here.
ASIANS ARE GOOD WITH TECHNOLOGY
I’d say I’m fairly good at fixing problems on my iPhone (have you tried turning it off and turning it back on?), but I have trouble with more complicated things like cars, computers, toaster ovens, etc.
ASIANS ARE NERDY
I talk about books and have a writing blog, what do you think?
ASIANS CAN DO KUNGFU
So I actually got my black belt in Taekwondo around the seventh grade, and I’m pretty proud of it.
ASIANS LOVE RICE
I love rice but I like to melt butter on top of it (something that Asians apparently do not do) and I’ve been called out for this one. Buttered rice is GOOD, you guys are just mean.
Hope you enjoyed this post and, if you haven’t already, go see Crazy Rich Asians in theaters and let me know what you think! Until next week,
