2 Reasons Why You Should Include Shake Flashlights In Your Emergency Kit

by Dora Lowe

If you live in an area that is prone to natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornados, or flooding, you may have decided that putting together an emergency kit would be a good idea. As part of your kit, you know that you need a light source in case the power goes out and leaves you without light. However, you may be worried that you may not have enough batteries for the flashlights you include. If so, consider the following reasons why you should consider including shake flashlights in your kit instead.

1.  Batteries Are Not Required to Make the Flashlight Work

One major reason why you should use shake flashlights instead of battery-powered ones is that the former does not require batteries to work. Instead, it contains two magnets that provide the juice needed to light the LED bulb.

When you shake the flashlight for a few seconds, the magnets connect with one another and generate a charge to light up the bulb. To reach the maximum brightness, shake the flashlight for about a half a minute. Then, as the light starts to dim, simply shake the flashlight again to brighten it up. You will not have to worry about having enough batteries or being caught in the dark while trying to change them.

2.  Wet Conditions or Old Batteries Will Not Corrode the Interior

Another problem with battery-powered flashlights is that their interiors are prone to corrosion because of the metal contacts and wires. When left in wet conditions, these components will rust because they are thin and vulnerable to oxidation. Also, if batteries are left in the flashlights for too long and become bad, they will leak, corrode the contacts, and make lighting the flashlights impossible.

However, since there are no batteries in the shake variety, you do not have to worry about them leaking out and corroding the interior. And, since the usual metal components are replaced by magnets that do not rust, you do not have to worry about the possibility of a ruined flashlight.

When the lights go out, you won't have to check the condition of the flashlights. You will only have to shake them up to get some much-needed light.

Because they do not require batteries to work and are resistant to water, these types of flashlights make an ideal addition to your home's emergency kit.
